Kia ora koutou,
The days are getting longer, and Spring is in the air! We've been getting lots of compliments in the Clubhouse from members & visitors alike about how great the course is looking. Bring on daylight savings!
From the President
Bringing the Club into the 21st Century: The kiwi release a few months ago created a sense of excitement around the club with several people looking to build on this with initiatives such as kiwi themed merchandise and tee markers. Please hold your horses - there is a major exercise underway that is intended to transform the way the club looks and is experienced by both members and visitors. More to come on this shortly.
Membership: On the back of a range of initiatives including the junior coaching programme being driven by Clayton Willocks, the much-improved course and playing experience, our membership has increased year on year by 33 to 427, largely juniors. A new initiative to attract women members is planned for October. On top of this the overall number of rounds played is up significantly (fine weekends are getting very busy), with green fees income well ahead of budget. This income has held up well over the leaner winter months, and after the restructuring, costs are down meaning that our financials are in better, though not exactly good, shape. We are now preparing next year's budgets based on better figures than this time last year.
Committee for Coming Year: We have a very solid core of expertise in the committee that will carry over to next year, but we do need new blood. It is not necessarily a huge time commitment, but it is essential to the operation of the club so please seriously consider putting your hand up - I think it will be an exciting and positive year of growth.
Reviewer for Annual Accounts: We require a reviewer to vet (essentially audit) our annual accounts. If we have any chartered accountants out there who might be interested in helping (or if you know someone to tap on the shoulder) please contact treasurer Terry McAllister (treasurer@karorigolf.co.nz).
From the Superintendent
IMPORTANT!!! Weather Watch: There's a heavy rain warning for this Saturday night/Sunday morning. Please check the ‘Course Status’ on our website before you leave home to potentially save a wasted trip. If the course is closed, the greens staff will communicate this via the website (i.e. no email will be sent).
Greens Coring 03 – 04 Sep: The course will be closed for coring on Wed 03 & Thu 04 Sep. We'll need around 12 volunteers each day so if you're willing and available, please let the clubhouse know. The plan is to have 9 holes open on Thu 05 Sep and be back to normal by Fri 06 Sep.
Divots & Pitch Marks: There has been a noticeable increase in unrepaired divots and ball marks. Our greenskeepers work hard to keep the course in the best condition possible throughout the year, but they need our help. We all must do our part to take care of and respect our course. We ask our members to do just a few simple things:
Doing these things will enhance the quality and enjoyment of our golf, and maintain the morale of our dedicated greenskeepers!!!
Unrepaired divots from Tuesday afternoon on the 11th & 16th Fairways
Club Competitions
Club Champ Qualifiers - 01 & 08 Sep: This is our pre-eminent club event, played in four divisions: Senior (playing handicap 0 - 9), Intermediate (playing handicap 10 - 16), Junior A (playing handicap 17 to 23), and Junior B (playing handicap 23+). Please enter ASAP via:
9-Hole Midweek Women: We were pleased to be able to play for the second week in a row and many of our players commented on how well the course was looking, after a bit of wind and sun. Congratulations to Kath Robinson who scored the most points on a count back in our fun and unusual competition called Bingle, Bangle, Bungle. Second was Karen Simcock and third was Jane Campbell. Well done everyone.
Wednesday Club: A field of 21 golfers played a stableford competition in dry but testing conditions. David Comans was the winner on 40 points with Ian Bates second on countback from Marcus Henry, both with 38 points. Christopher Pearce was nearest the pin and made the two. Martin Leung also had a two on the 4th. Martin won the cash raffle with Saint second. Patrick Cordue won the fine red wine raffle with Matthew Everett taking second prize.
Futures/Juniors: Last Sunday was another great turnout. Our teaching pro, Stephen Wood, will run a coaching session on the practice range this Sunday, getting the Juniors warmed up for their round with some games and swing tips. The format is:
Note: Sessions for learner golfers can be arranged with Maurice Munro - contact the clubhouse to arrange a suitable time (clubhouse@karorigolf.co.nz).
