Good morning golfers
This issue will concentrate on three matters.
1. Course Renovation
2. Club Championships
3. Membership
I'm very much looking forward to getting back to Wellington to help out around the place. I have been busy settling things in the south and it's now time to get back.
I want to particularly acknowledge and thank Clayton Willocks for stepping up to cover my absence. He's is on top of most things, is personable and competent and from the reports I am getting back is helpful in all instances.
He has taken a methodical approach to working through the things which need sorting out in our administration and is making great progress. I'm sure he will be embarassed that I have singled him out for some praise, but, credit where credit is due.
1. Course Renovation
Clayton has recruited a good group of volunteers to help on both the Tuesday and Wednesday 3 & 4 September. Thank you to everyone who has put their hand up. Most of you by now will have received a message about date, time and place.
There is still room for anyone else who wants to join the twenty or so volunteers and you can contact Clayton on the club email (clubhouse@karorigolf.co.nz) or phone his at (04 476 7337). Talk to him or any of the staff if you are in the clubhouse.
You may also just turn up on the day. If you do please wear sturdy shoes, have a pair of gloves and a water bottle and call in to the clubhouse when you arrive.
Tuesday volunteers should start arriving at 7am to follow immediately behind the coring machine.
There is plenty to do around the course so the more the merrier.
The club will supply lunch on both days.
Once again, many thanks to those who have already put their hands up. It's a great help to TK and the team.
2. Club Championships
I said that I would keep bothering you all about the club champs and here we go again.
The Seniors and Intermediates are getting traction with both divisions gradually filling up. Sadly the Junior Divisions are lagging.
I get it that people often leave it to the last minute before entering but it does cause problems as we need to organise tee times to accommodate our event, and cater for green fee players in a manner that there are no "clashes" on the course.
If you are playing an event it is mighty annoying to have a group of players jump on in front of you, similarly it is annoying to green fee players to have to provide right of way for a competition. Keeping a good degree of seperation in the field caters for everyones golfing enjoyment.
So, let's get the entries in. Online (https://www.karorigolf.co.nz/event-calendar), email (clubhouse@karorigolf.co.nz), phone (04 476 7337), or sign on sheet in the downstairs foyer.
Entries close in nine days time on the 29th of August. There will be no post entries.
(Note - the course will be closed for a good period of the day(s) to accommodate club champs and I would recommend to anyone looking for Sunday golf to enter the club champs.)
3. Membership
Our clubhouse page shows that we have 400 members exactly as of this morning (351 men, 49 women, 50 juniors).
The growth area has been amongst the juniors thanks to the work of Maurice Munro, Stephen Wood (golf professional) and Clayton Willocks ably assisted by his partner who has helped out with word "professional promotion".
The clubhouse is abuzz when the "futures" golfers arrive back in from their golf games. Really fun to see.
Our membership base for a "city" course is way too small however, and we must put more effort in to attracting more people to join our club.
We have a very strong package to promote.
We have a challenging eighteen hole course, well groomed and maintained and getting better all the time, we have very good practice facilities which are well defined and maintained, we have a well stocked and staffed clubhouse with all the facilities members could need and improvements are being made all the time, members have access to a qualified golf professional at discounted rates, and we provide casual and organised golf for members to the extent of their abilities and interest.
Access to the course is not an issue as without exception we never have a full timesheet.
We have a number of packages that may help encourage golfers to join up. These have been publicised before but here they are again:
As members, you are our best advertisement and I would encourage you all to talk up our course amongst any of your friends/family who are golfers. We could accommodate a hundred or more new members at the course without any congestion at all.
4. Coaching
He's really good.
If you need a checkup about your game make a time to see Stephen. You won't regret it.
Remember though, it will only work if you work at it. Did I say something earlier about our good practice facilities?
Ends
That's all for this week.
Enjoy your golfing week and for those thinking about it, get more involved.
Looking forward to being back on the course next week.
Mark Peck
Club Captain.
