Kia ora koutou,
Not long now until the Club Champs! Entries are lagging in all divisions, so get in now. This may be your only chance in 2024 to make the Honours Board! Of course, the other way is to volunteer for Club President or one of our Club Captains! Something to reflect on over the weekend perhaps?
Club Competitions
Club Champ Qualifiers - 01 & 08 Sep: This is our pre-eminent club event, played in four divisions: Senior (playing handicap 0 - 9), Intermediate (playing handicap 10 - 16), Junior A (playing handicap 17 to 23), and Junior B (playing handicap 23+). Please enter ASAP via:
9-Hole Midweek Women: Memorial Day. We played for the Memorial Cup on Tuesday, a very poignant day in honour of members who have passed away in the last decade since the elegant cup was donated. Congratulations to Marion Thompson who won with 15 Stablefords on a countback from Lindsey Pickering and Connie Lee. Well done all three players. The 3-putt fund was topped up a little more than usual, even though the greens were in great order. Sometimes you just have days like that!
Marion Thompson (L) is presented with the Memorial Cup by Chris Suggate (R), the 9-Hole convenor.
Wednesday Club: 18 regulars and 2 new members (Phillip Watts and Allan Taylor - welcome) enjoyed fine sunny conditions for the latest Par round. Unfortunately, due to the day's ban on carts 7 additional regulars were unable to participate. The winner on countback was Patrick Cordue (wine) on +1 from Martin Leung (chocolates) and Victor Diem (ball) both also on +1. Balls were awarded down to -2. There were no Twos, but NTP was Matthew Everett who paid the pig! The convenor of the most golf prizes has suggested a preference for chocolates instead of balls in future! The raffle was won by Ian Bates and Patrick Cordue to cries of rigged!
Futures/Juniors: We’ve recently hit a major milestone of 50 junior members! This is impressive given we had just 6 in 2019! This Sunday all juniors are invited to tee off together between 11.30am - Noon. They can choose which tees & whether to play 9-holes or 18-holes. There’ll be complimentary fries and a drink for those that join the junior cohort.
From the Superintendent
Greens Coring: 03 - 04 Sep: The course will be closed for coring on Wed 03 & Thu 04 Sep. This is essential work to help combat common challenges such as soil compaction, thatch accumulation, waterlogging, and nutrient deficiencies. We hope to have the front 9 open by Thu 05 Sep. We've had an excellent response to the call for volunteers, however, we can never have too many! There's something for everyone to do and it's OK to roll up on the day. All you need to bring is:
Like I said - there’s always something to do – thanks Maurice!
Greens Fertilising: The greens were fertilised this week and therefore were unable to be cut for a few days. Apologies to those who found them a little bumpy recently. Like coring, this is essential work to keep our greens healthy and true.
Carts: Please avoid wet areas when using carts. During the week the path to/from the 12th tee box was closed to carts due to it presenting a slipping, sliding, tipping danger. If you see dangerous or careless cart activity, please let staff know.

Membership Offers: There is still plenty of space in our weekly booking sheet for more members! Please tell your friends how great our course is looking and get them out for a round. Membership prices are on our website; however, these are the additional specials we are currently running:
Golf Lessons: Sharpen up your game for the Club Champs with Stephen Wood, our part-time golf pro. Stephen has a distinguished golf pedigree. As a player, he was a member of the NZ Senior Titleist Academy and played inter-provincial golf for both Manawatu-Wanganui and Wellington regions. He obtained his Australasian tour card, and played on the PGA Tour of Australia during the 2000’s. Stephen offers our members significantly discounted rates and comes highly recommended. You can contact him on (021) 384424 or wood_golfpro@yahoo.co.nz. Please also remember, Maurice Munro is available to assist any learner golfers out there - please contact the clubhouse to arrange a suitable time (clubhouse@karorigolf.co.nz).
Reviewer for Annual Accounts: We are still looking for a reviewer to vet (essentially audit) our annual accounts. If you’re a chartered accountant and are interested in helping (or if you know someone to tap on the shoulder) please contact treasurer Terry McAllister (treasurer@karorigolf.co.nz).
Dogs: Dogs are welcome on the course at Karori Golf Club, however, they must be Kiwi Avoidance Trained (KAT) to be allowed off their lead. If dogs have not been KAT trained, they must remain on a lead at all times. There is a KAT dog register kept in the Clubhouse.
We trust you have an awesome week!
