What an outstanding response to the City of Wellington Classic! The course is looking superb and we have over 100 entries (50/50 split between Karori and outside members). Golfers from Scotland, Vietnam, as well as the South Island will be participating. It's going to be a cracker day! Thanks to everyone who has played a part in helping get ready for this major annual event.

We'd like to extend a big welcome to our newest club member this week, Oliver Culbert (Junior U18).

Ladies

  • 9 Hole Midweek Women’s: We finally managed to complete our 9 Hole Club Championship after many interrupted weeks.  Congratulations to Lindsey Pickering who won the Championship after the 10th hole in a closely contested game against Hilary Newby. Congratulations also to Karen Simcox who defeated Marion Thompson to take the Flight Championship. (Cheers Chris)

  • She Loves Golf: Unfortunately the weather played its part in disrupting the first She Loves Golf event we’d planned for Tuesday evening.  The next session (5pm on Tue 5 November) is fully subscribed so all offers to help Maurice (i.e. provide putting and pitching tips) will be gratefully received. Maurice will provide volunteer coaches a brief lesson on these skills beforehand. Please email the Ladies Club Captain, Denise Marten (denise@karorigolf.co.nz) if you can assist.

  • Golf & Wine: Every Tuesday evening there's an open invite to meet other ladies for a fun and relaxed game of golf. Non-members welcome. All levels. Perfect way to get in a round of golf after work. Tee-off from 5:45pm. Thanks to Sarah Ellis for coordinating.

Wednesday Club

  • Due to the weather, Wednesday Club was canceled this week.

Wednesday Twilight

  • We had a great turn out for Twilight this week with 23 keen golfers, happy to be playing in the late afternoon sun, after such a miserable morning on Wednesday. We welcomed two new competitors - self-labeled 'refugees', Colin and Kate Brown from Ohariu Valley (as their course was closed).

  • This week third place, with 18 stablefords, went to Tim Brosnahan and Geoff Lee (winning a $10 voucher), second place to Gail Kirkland on 20 points (and a $15 voucher) and Andrew Gardner rocked home in first place with 23 points and a $20 voucher. NTP was Peter Nichols and we had no 'twos' this week, just a mere eagle on the 7th from our new Miramar friend, Laurie Vitale.

  • Big thanks again to those who help out at Twilight, this week particularly Pete Alkema for BBQing and to Karen Simcox for her restaurant-style salad. Thanks to Isaac in the kitchen and to Richard Reith, our sponsor from Collective First National. (Cheers Gail)

City Of Wellington Classic

  • One more sleep! Thanks to all our members who have supported this event, whether it be by enetering or helping prepare (or both!). Some key points to note for tomorrow:
    • No dogs please - to respect all competitors
    • When the draw is completed, you will receive an email
    • 8am - Registration opens (pay & collect your card)
    • 9am - Multi-tee start
    • With over 100 golfers, pace of play will be slow - please be patient
    • Check the local rules board before play (whiteboard downstairs)
    • No gimmes - this is a stroke competition so you must hole out
    • Penalty Areas are marked with Red Stakes
    • GUR is marked with Blue Stakes, and White Rope on Stays, and White Painted areas
    • Drop Zones are clearly defined and marked DZ
    • Please take a sand bucket and repair divots & pitch marks
    • All cards must be completed, entered into the computer, and signed by both player and marker
    • There is a raffle on sale. Good prizes, $5 for 3 tickets, $2 a ticket
    • Prizegiving will commence within a few minutes of final cards being returned.

Juniors

  • Junior Golf Coaching Programme: 45 juniors will be back this Sunday. Holes 1 - 9 will be for the exclusive use of programme participants between 1:30/2:00 - 4:30/5:00pm. Timings vary depending on which groups are playing the course each week. The practice facilities (fairway and putting green) will also be closed for programme use from 3:00 - 4:30pm. Please consider this when planning your golfing weekend.

  • Call for Junior Golf Helpers this Sunday. We're seeking 3-4 helpers for this Sunday only. The job is to make sure parents get to the right start hole and then know the direction of the next hole/s. It'll take about 30mins of your time from 2.45pm. Please call Stephen Wood is you're able to assist - 021 384424.

These members have been out there mowing; cutting back rough; repairing tee blocks, divots & pitch marks; as well as collecting and piling up branches & sticks under the trees. You can really see the difference. We are very lucky to have such a committed group of volunteers - thank you all (Cheers TK).

Cart Use

If you're using carts this weekend, please stick to the fairways and avoid soft areas. If your ball is in the rough, park on the fairway and walk to it. This will not only protect the wetter areas from being damaged, but also make it less likely we'll need to prevent cart use in the future.

Slow Play

Another reminder about how we can speed up play tomorrow. It is the duty of every golfer to keep up with the game in front not just ahead of the game behind.

Here are some ways to speed up your play:

  1. Play ready golf - if it is safe to do so, play your shot even if you’re nearer the hole than your playing partners.
  2. Pay attention - watch your playing partners’ tee shots as well as your own.
  3. Play the right tees - playing a longer course will mean a longer round, so try to avoid this when its busy.
  4. Let faster players through - if you can't stay ahead.
  5. Play a provisional - it's much easier & quicker than trudging back to the tee or divot in the fairway having not found your tee or approach shot.
  6. Don't mark your card on the green - do it on the next tee.
  7. Pick up - if there’s no need to putt out, then don’t.
  8. Walk quicker - it gets your heart rate up and home earlier!

Club Trophies

Can all Club Champs Trophies (as well as other trophies recently awarded) please be returned to the clubhouse for engraving.

Course Marshals Are Here!

With immediate effect we will start marshaling the course in the late afternoon. The purpose is to 1) stop freeloaders playing our course without paying green fees (we've already caught four); and 2) monitor course condition. Please do not be offended if you are approached and asked for your membership number and always book a tee-time online before heading to the golf course. This will be a great help to our marshals as they wil have mobile access to the tee booking sheet.

Our staff work hard to keep the course in great condition, and this comes with a cost. Anyone who uses the course should pay their share and we intend to help them do so. We look forward to seeing some of you on your late afternoon rounds. Good golfing!

Annual General Meeting

The 2024 AGM (the 56th for lovers of history) will be held at the Clubrooms, 9.30am on Sat 07 Dec 24. This will be followed by a disc draw for 18- or 9-Holes of golf. We are still seeking members to join the committee. Nomination forms are available on the Clubhouse noticeboard and must be received by 30 Nov 24.
