For the first time since 2010 the Karori Golf Club had a team of Juniors contesting the Watt Cup, the premier junior inter club competition.  They competed well gaining a point and a half in their first match.

Our 18 hole pennant team and junior 9 hole team also acquited themselves well too.  The 9 hole team won their match 4/2. Thank you to Maurice Munro who marshaled at Karori on Sunday and the parent coordinators for each of our junior teams.

This is all attributed to the work our club manager and Stephen Wood (Golf Professional) have done to establish the junior academy.  This first crop of graduates are preforming admirably. Several of the youngsters are now playing well in our senior inter club teams too. Exciting times for the Karori Golf Club.

Our Senior Inter Club teams have now played two rounds with Division 9 having a perfect day winning at home against Mahunga 15/0, and leading their division early.  Thank you to all out inter club captains for their efforts and good luck for a successful season. Inter club teams are always looking for new recruits so if you are keen (yes you) don't be shy in letting us know.

Friday is Waitangi Day and the course is packed today.  If you have a tee time please arrive in plenty of time and exercise a sense of humour as play may be a little slow.  Every effort will be made to ensure that tee times are observed and that pace of play is reasonable.

Other key points/highlights to note for this week are:

  • Cheap Firewood - selling at the GK Shed on Sundays between 2 - 4pm. Get in quick! Details below. Note, there will be no sales this weekend.
  • Film Crew Onsite - this film crew has been on site since 1 February utilising space in our carpark. On 23 Feb they will also be sharing our Clubhouse. More detailed information below.
  • Cart Service - Wed 11 Feb (morning) our carts are being serviced by EZGO. Limited cart availability. Wed Club have booking priority.
  • New Members - A huge welcome to our 3 new members who have joined over the last week:
    • Raewyn Devlin (Full Intro)
    • Kevin Ryan (Mid Week)
    • Gus McHardy (19U)

Women

Once again the weather defeated us in our endeavours to get some golf in this week.

As mentioned last week, the next competition open to Sunday 18 hole players is LGU 1 with putting. This is played off the yellow tees, maximum handicap of 40.4 and a nett round so players cannot pick up. The event will be listed on the scorecard on February 8, play and enter your putts on the chart in the women's changing room.

We have 22 x 18 hole women members, so it would be great to see participation from as many as possible. You are able to play at anytime on the Sunday with anyone who can mark your card. This would not disqualify you from the Sunday stableford competition you can play both at the same time.

Hoping to encourage everyone to take part when possible.

Cheers Denise
Womens Club Captain

9 Hole Women IC

9 Hole women currently sit 5th in their division and are set for their next round on the 9th of February at Shandon Golf Club.

Wednesday Club

11 stalwarts were delighted the course had recovered quickly from yesterday's deluge. After initially experiencing autumnally cool conditions the par round was finished in summery warmth. The winner was Alex Lim with +3 ( wine), runners-up Martin Leung +2 ( Chocs), Ian Bates 0  ( ball). NTP Saint Kennach ( ball). Raffle winners Chris Pearce and Derek Fitzgibbon. Events of note: Mike Cox, Marcus Henry, Bob Cavana and Ian Bates  playing as a four each scored a 3 on the Par 3 13th. Ian also scored a thank you beer for crash-tackling Mike's runaway cart as it was about to launch itself into the swollen stream below the 11th green. In addition to ensuring trundler brakes are firmly applied watch out for Victor Diem as he is trading-in his Tesla for an autonomous ( self steering) later version!!

Wednesday Twilight

Twenty seven golfers turned up for  Round 17 of Twilight this week. Great conditions this week saw many shooting to or just under their handicap.

On the podium this week: Andrew Gardner took out first place with 24 stableford points (which included an eagle on #7), closely followed by Henry Maurice  with 23 points and Brigitte Boenisch-Brednich came third on 20 points.

Eric McAuley won the NTP, with Phil Apperley getting the only 'two’ on hole #4.

A big thanks this week to John Stubbe and Graeme Couper on the BBQ, to Brigitte for another lovely salad and to Isaac in the kitchen.

See you all next week for another fun evening of golf and dinner!

Stop Press

What a delight it was to play the course late this afternoon.  All the heavy rough was removed, the creeks were clean and balls were able to be found with ease.

A big thank you to the green staff for all their mahi this week.

I'm sure pace of play will improve.

Adopt-A-Hole

Select your own piece of the course to care for! Select a hole to keep clean and tidy. Tasks that will help include clearing debris away (pile in the trees to be collected), repair divots, maybe some weed eating.

Currently, Wayne Cook (our Treasurer), looks after hole number 11, I look after hole number 1. This is a job that can be day your leisure. Either take a hole on yourself, or a group of you can give it a go. All sand and seed is available from the club. Depending on capability, weed eaters and fuel may be available too.

Piles of debris left in an accessible place will be picked up by our staff or volunteers in their regular rounds. So come help out. A schedule of helpers will be posted on the notice board to acknowledge your contribution. Please email president@karorigolf.co.nz if you're interested in helping out. (Cheers Mark Peck)

Course Development Plan

Committee discussed this at it's last meeting and consultations will be taking place soon. Much of the work that needs to be done is not controversial and the bits that are will need some considered dialogue.

In the meantime people can help our green keepers by taking sand buckets to repair divots on the fairways and rough (with no placing in the rough this is important as a ball ending up in a sanded divot may be dropped out of the divot without penalty - no sand, no drop without penalty).  Also help keep our greens in great shape by repairing plug marks on the greens.  It only takes a moment.

It's great to see the stream banks cleaned up too.  Thank you to TK and his staff for this mahi.

Longest Day: Phil Hartley

Kia ora friends,

I'm stepping up to The Longest Day challenge – I’ll be playing 4 rounds of golf on my 75th birthday on 10 February to raise funds for New Zealanders affected by cancer. I've lost too many friends to cancer over the years, so I'm doing my bit for those who can't. I’ll be walking all 4 rounds, carrying my bag.

Please support me by donating at my page and you'll be helping to fund research, prevention and support for people impacted by cancer:

Thanks for your support! I really appreciate it.

Love and big hugs to all,
Phil

Miramar Reciprocal Arrangement

We are delighted to report that the Miramar Reciprocal Arrangement is going really well.  We have just invoiced Miramar for a sum of ~$4.5k for the month of January, but we do note that a bunch of that figure was made up of the Miramar inter club practice day on 17 Jan.

There also seems to have been no appreciable impact on our members access to the course as we normally have sufficient tee slots available for everyone, and we do reserved early morning slots for members only.

Course Marshalls

We are on the lookout for course marshalls.

Sadly there are some out there who thin its ok to play for nothing.  As well as that, bad behaviour creeps in (sharing one set of clubs, playing in groups of more than four, disrespecting the course and the like).

Marshalls can assist all golfer to enjoy their game more by ensuring that they hav paid and are well equiped to play and not inconvenience others on the course.

If you have some time availble to give a back a little to our unique club, please let our Club Captain Deane Milne know (clubcaptain@karori golf.co.nz).  There will be training before you are called in to service.

Those who have marshalled in the past report that one of the best spin offs from catching the "no payers" is that many of them end up joining the club as that is by far the cheaper option to paying green fees over time. So it is beneficial and helpful to the club.
