The committee made some key decisions this week - a summary is outlined below. The junior coaching programme continues to go from strength-to-strength and we're looking forward to hosting the Karori Eagles Halberg Foundation Tournament tomorrow. There is also a 'Shirties' versus 'The Goats' matchplay challenge happening on Sunday morning - good luck to those competing and may the best team win!

We've had four new members join this week. A big welcome to:

  • Zach Hetariki (Junior 19-25)
  • Albie Robertson (Junior 18U)
  • Thomas Wilson (Junior 26-31)
  • CC Kim (9H Intro)

Ladies

  • 9 Hole Midweek Women’s:  On Tuesday we played our last club competition for the year with Closing Day scheduled for next Tuesday.  Congratulations to Chris Suggate for winning the Top Cat Mug trophy in a Nett competition playoff with Lindsey Pickering and Julie Wilcox. (Cheers Chris)

  • Golf & Wine: Every Tuesday evening there's an open invite to meet other ladies for a fun and relaxed game of golf. Non-members welcome. All levels. Perfect way to get in a round of golf after work. Tee-off from 5:45pm. Thanks to Sarah Ellis for co-ordinating.

Wednesday Club

  • We had 18 players for a Stableford competition. The course was looking great but there was a gusty wind which made conditions difficult. Patrick Cordue prevailed with 37 points ahead of Terry McAlister on 34 points. Patrick took the wine and Terry took two golf balls. Also, golf balls were given to the three people on 33 points. Ossie was nearest the pin but did have to pay the pig for missing her putt. Christopher Pearce had the only two of the day on the 13th. Ossie won the cash raffle with Martin second. (Cheers Patrick)

Wednesday Twilight

  • Another great Wednesday evening for Twilight Golf! 31 competitors came out to play and, for the second week in a row, the best scores were from those who played close to their handicap. Four golfers won a $5 voucher with 17 stableford points: Dick Borgdoff, Adrian Porter, Steve Witkowski and Terry Bastion. Four golfers took second place with 18 points, and won a $10 voucher: Tim Brosnahan, Luanne Cockburn, Wayne Cook and Troy Keilly.

  • This week's competition was won by our youngest Twilight golfer ever, Will Lyall (7 years), with 19 points. Will won a $20 voucher and a golf ball!  Thank you to Keith Gaskin, who presented Will with his prize. Golf balls also went to John Lyall for a 'two' and to Martin Binks for NTP.

  • A big thanks to the BBQ team for this week: Steve, Dick and Adrian. Thanks to Karen and Brigitte for the lovely salads and to Isaac for running the kitchen and bar. See you next week! (Cheers Gail)

Gaskies - 9am Every Sunday

  • Gaskies is an "all comers" group of members who meet on Sunday morning to play golf and enjoy each other's company. It is particularly good for new members who are looking for people to pair up with to enjoy their golf. Be at the picnic table at 8.45am for the card draw before the 9am tee off.  You never know who you will be playing with so your chance of meeting more golfers at the club is pretty good.

Junior Golf

  • Junior Golf Coaching Programme: 45 juniors will be back this Sunday. To allow the programme to run, the 1st Tee will be closed from 2pm until 5pm. The 10th Tee will be available to book from 4pm and the 1st Tee from 5pm. The practice facilities (fairway and putting green) will also be closed for programme use from 3 - 4pm. Please consider this when planning your golfing weekend.

Weekly Update

The unsettled weather put paid to our spraying plans this week, so the majority of our time was spent mowing. We're investigating the constant stream of water that has appeared on the path to the 12th Tee Block. If it continues, we will likley need to redirect it under the path.

Green Damage

It was disturbing to discover this morning damage to the 6th green. If anyone witnesses such behaviour, or comes accross this type of reckless damage, please report it immediately to clubhouse@karorigolf.co.nz. That way we can keep records of incidents (i.e. date, time discovered, damage, photos etc) and perhaps track down the individual/s responsible. The club can then take appropriate action.

Monthly Meeting Summary

The last meeting of the current committee was held on Tuesday and the following is of note:

  1. Grants were received for a new “Snake Mower” ($35K from NZCT), automated irrigation system ($4k from Pub Charity) and the committee approved progress on both fronts. The new irrigation system should be installed in short order. TK is updating quotes for the new mower and progress will be made soon. A portion of the cost of the new mower will need to be financed.

  2. New signs will be erected at the entrance, the practice fairway, in the carpark and on the first and tenth tees advising about green fees, where to pay, and course etiquette.

  3. The committee agreed to increase the “Freeloader” penalty for not paying green fees from $70 to $150. The new signage will reflect this.

  4. The use of the 10th Tee as a starting hole in the evenings (after 5:30pm) will be progressively enabled on the tee booking sheet and reserved for members only (unless green-fee players are expressly authorised by clubhouse staff). Members booking the 10th as a starting hole must respect that, AT ALL TIMES, golfers playing through from the 9th Hole have right-of-way.

  5. The practice fairway is for the use of members only, unless a green fee is paid. The green fee will be the same as a nine-hole green fee. Signage will be erected to reflect this.

  6. The committee agreed to pass on the 2.5% credit & contactless payment surcharge to customers. There is no surcharge for EFTPOS or debit cards that are inserted or swiped.

  7. Members are reminded to use the tee booking sheet every time they play the course. This will assist our marshalling efforts. Too often, staff arrive in the morning to find several cars in the carpark, but just one or two bookings in the start sheet.

The committee farewelled President Mike Suggate who is not seeking re-election. A reminder that elections for officers and committee will be held at the Annual General Meeting to be held at the club, 9.30am, on Saturday 7 December 2024 (Note: This will be followed by a disc draw for 18- or 9-Holes of golf). A formal notice of meeting and papers will be available to all members shortly.
